Entertainment, or so I've been told

Hail

I've promptly decided to write a blog, while I really should be doing coursework (Yes! I have started college again!)

This blog will be short, to the punch and completely at random.

First off, roughly 2 months ago, I found out Amorphis was releasing a live CD/DVD package called "Forging the Land of Thousand Lakes". I thoroughly enjoyed live versions with Tomi Joutsen providing vocals to "Sign from the North Side", "Black Winter Day" etc.. but at the same time I kept wondering how those songs would sound if they were actual studio quality, as in: studio record.

I figured that would be a slim chance. It would never happen.
Fortunately, I couldn't be more wrong.

On september 17th, Amorphis released "Magic & Mayhem - Tales from the Early Years" featuring re-recordings of fantastic songs from the first three albums with Tomi Joutsen doing vocals this time while former lead vocalist (and still rhythm guitarist) Tomi Koivusaari doing back up vocals on some songs.

I came. Ahem. Of course, being the objective critic that I am, I checked out the album song for song and concluded that it was awesome, and thus I came.

Many would consider this record to be 'redundant', but at the same time, a true must-have for everyone who enjoys Joutsen's vocals.

To give you an idea of Tomi's fantastic vocals:

At the very end, Tomi shows his fantastic grunting skills. As people have stated: "This man hides a monster"

Enough with the blatant plugging of one of my favorite bands.

Whoever actually reads this (leave a comment while you're at it :D) will be pleased to hear that I finally bothered to catch up with TNA Hardcore Justice.

I can't help but be intrigued at the fact that people actually liked it. Of course, now having seen the PPV, I know just exactly why:

It's nothing more than a road trip to Ville de Nostalgie. It was pretty sad, really. While the various matches on the card showcased everyone's signature maneuvers (Kid Kash's flip dive, Dreamer DDT, ...) it was still not even half as good as what WWE did with ONS 2005. I specifically single out 2005, since 2006 and beyond were pretty much superstar infested crap doodles. The fact that they were limited due to copyright issues was laughable. Calling Balls Mahoney "cojones" and Justin Credible "PJ Polaco" made it seem that much more of a amateur gathering.

Seeing New Jack and Mustafa though was fantastic. While they brought virtually nothing to this show, besides showing up, it was a welcome appearance for me.

It was good to see all these former ECW stars rejoicing in what they once did, and having fun at the same time. Though, TNA, don't get your hopes up too much. The buys for this PPV were probably above average, but that's all you're gonna get from it.

On a sidenote, Tommy Dreamer should book every show from now on. C'mon, it was pretty much the most consistent TNA show I've seen since forever.

Alright, time to get that coursework done and then just do jack all for the rest of the evening.

It's been a pleasure, bai

  1. fear not as i heard your prayer, buddy, and thus i'll leave a comment on this blog.

You'll crucify me on the spot when i tell you i dont know this band of yours, and i've gotta go to work in a matter of 5 minutes, so i'll endure the pain of still not knowing it for another day...
As for TNA Hardcore Justice, though it be a rip off from WWE's ONS, I still truly believe that beyond all the PG crap and all the cheesy storylines, the smark will also rejoice to see some TLCs, bins, etc...Some (as you) say they do use these prompts because they can't work a match, but hell, I do think the ECW workers and WWF's Raw is War moments were the most enjoyable. So I say, BRING THE TABLES!

  2. Oh true, true. I've never been a big fan of the garbage wrestling ECW brought most of the time ( obviously barring guys like Chris Jericho, Lance Storm, Shane Douglas, Mike Awesome ...) but I do like some "foreign objects" injected from time to time.

Obviously, with "from time to time" I'm referring to ye olden days of RAW is WAR and PPV's when guys like the Dudleys were putting Mae Young/Terri Runnels/Lita and whoever else through tables just for the hell of it.

TLC 2 at X-Seven still qualifies as one of my favorite WWF matches of all time, despite it featuring the Hardy for whom I hold an unmatched hatred
(I'd take a John Cena Iron Man extravaganza over a Jeff Hardy spot fest any day of the week).

It's besides the point though. It seems like I'm praising WWE into the heavens while putting TNA in the ground with this blog. I dislike both very much, simply because nothing feels new.

Considering the most exciting thing I've witnessed in WWE is Kane's world title win and Paul Bearer subsequent return to the company speaks for the product they're putting on these days.

Anyway, checked the band yet? I'm not sure if it's much to your liking, but I truly wouldn't care less :P Let me know on FB or here ;)

  3. after giving your band a listening, I must say they're not half bad in what they're doing, even though they have a musicality that is (a little too) close to black metal. I'm myself more interested in heavy metal, such as Sepultura(olden days)/Machinehead; or bands such as Metallica. This kind. Yep.
Regarding this one band, I must confess that for a live, the sound seems quite good, some metal bands can be quite messy on stage, these have some quality in their game, hats off for that. As for the lead singer's voice, it will never best my own favourite voice in ages, Max Cavalera. Yep.

  4. Max Cavalera, lol. The irony in your reaction is great.

"some metal bands can be quite messy on stage". Sounds like Max all over :P

Oh, and Amorphis =/= black metal. It edges more to melodic death metal if anything.

  5. When I said I was a Cavalera fan, make no mistake I was talking about the vocal performance, I never got the chance to see them perform live.

These days I made a good old fashion leap into the past, as I listen almost continuously to the Black album. Metallica defo knows its shit best. ;)

  6. While the Black Album qualifies as one of my least favorite Metallica albums (along with St. Anger) there's quite a few good songs on there. "Don't Tread on Me for example."

Nothing on there beats "...And Justice for All" though.

Oh, check out Volbeat too, while you're at it. Their Metal 'n Roll is just too awesome.
